Facebook Ads Image Size Guide 2026: Every Ad Format

By Picovert Team2026-03-155 min read

Facebook ads run across multiple placements — feed, Stories, Reels, Messenger, and the Audience Network — and each has different image requirements. Uploading the wrong size causes cropping, rejected ads, or wasted budget on blurry creatives. This guide covers the exact dimensions and file specs for every Facebook ad format in 2026.

Facebook Feed Ads

Feed ads appear in the desktop and mobile News Feed, the right column (desktop only), and Facebook Marketplace.

  • Single image ad (square): 1080×1080 px — the safest option that works across feed and most placements. Minimum 600×600 px
  • Single image ad (landscape): 1200×628 px (1.91:1 ratio). Used for link preview cards and traffic campaigns. Will be cropped to square on mobile if you don't supply a separate mobile image
  • Single image ad (portrait): 1080×1350 px (4:5 ratio). Takes up more vertical screen space on mobile — highest visibility of the feed formats
  • Right column (desktop only): 1200×628 px minimum. This placement is small — avoid fine detail or small text
  • File size: under 30 MB. JPG or PNG. Aim for under 1 MB for fast loading and lower CPM

Facebook Stories and Reels Ads

  • Stories / Reels image: 1080×1920 px (9:16 ratio, full screen). Minimum resolution 500×889 px
  • Safe zone: keep all text, logos, and CTAs within the center 1080×1420 px area. Facebook overlays the profile icon and CTA button at the top and bottom — content outside the safe zone will be obscured
  • File size: under 30 MB. JPG or PNG for static images

Carousel Ads

Carousel ads show 2–10 cards in a swipeable row. Each card can have its own image, headline, and link.

  • Image size: 1080×1080 px (1:1 square) for each card. All cards should be the same ratio — mixing sizes causes visual inconsistency
  • Minimum resolution: 600×600 px per card
  • File size: under 30 MB per image. JPG or PNG
  • Number of cards: 2–10 cards per carousel

Collection Ads

Collection ads feature a large cover image or video at the top, with smaller product images below. Tapping opens an Instant Experience (full-screen mobile storefront).

  • Cover image: 1200×628 px (landscape) or 1080×1080 px (square)
  • Product images: minimum 500×500 px (square). These are pulled from your catalog or uploaded manually
  • File size: under 30 MB. JPG or PNG

Instant Experience (Canvas)

Instant Experience is a full-screen mobile ad format that loads when someone taps a Collection ad or a feed ad with the Instant Experience destination.

  • Full-screen image: 1080×1920 px (9:16), or the exact width of the device screen (typically 1080 px)
  • Header image: 882×66 px (aspect-ratio-locked header at top)
  • Product images: 600×600 px minimum for catalog items shown in the Instant Experience carousel

The Text Overlay Rule

Facebook penalizes ads where more than 20% of the image area is covered by text. Ads with heavy text overlays receive reduced delivery and higher CPM. Key rules:

  • Keep text overlays minimal — a short tagline or logo is fine; paragraph text on images is not
  • Facebook's Grid Tool (Meta Ads Manager) can check text coverage before submission
  • Price callouts, sale badges, and CTA text on the image all count toward the 20% limit — move these to the ad headline and description fields instead

File Format and Quality

  • JPG: use for photos and product images. Best compression at 80–90% quality. Avoid heavy compression artifacts — Facebook re-compresses uploaded images, so start with a higher quality source
  • PNG: use for graphics with text overlays, logos, or illustrations that need sharp edges. Larger files but better quality for non-photographic content
  • GIF: supported for static display but not animated in feed ads (use video for animation)
  • Maximum file size: 30 MB per image for all placements

Step-by-Step: Prepare Facebook Ad Images

  1. Choose your placement. Start with 1080×1080 px (square) if you want one image that works across feed, Stories, and Reels (Facebook will auto-crop for each)
  2. Crop to the target ratio: 1:1 for feed, 9:16 for Stories. Center the key visual — not at edges where safe-zone overlays will cover it
  3. Resize to 1080×1080 px (square) or 1080×1920 px (Stories/Reels). Higher resolution is always accepted; upload at the recommended size to avoid Facebook re-scaling
  4. Compress to under 1 MB. Facebook re-compresses uploads, but starting with a smaller, clean file reduces artifacts
  5. Check text coverage is under 20% before submitting to Meta Ads Manager
