Rotating and Flipping Images

Fixing orientation problems

Photos often arrive sideways or upside down, especially when taken on a phone held at an angle. Rotating in 90° steps corrects these orientation issues instantly, while flipping horizontally creates a mirror image — useful for selfies where text appears reversed, or for matching the direction of a subject.

Picovert lets you rotate left, rotate right, or flip along either axis with a single click, and shows the result immediately so you can confirm it looks right.

Lossless rotation explained

Rotating by 90, 180, or 270 degrees is a lossless operation: the pixels are simply rearranged, not recalculated, so there is zero quality loss no matter how many times you rotate. This is different from arbitrary-angle rotation, which must interpolate new pixels and can slightly soften the image.

For everyday orientation fixes — turning a portrait photo upright or correcting a scanned document — the 90° steps keep your image pixel-perfect.

EXIF orientation and privacy

Many cameras store an 'orientation' tag in EXIF metadata instead of physically rotating the pixels, which is why an image can look correct in one app and sideways in another. Permanently rotating the pixels removes this ambiguity so the image displays identically everywhere.

All rotation happens locally in your browser through Picovert, so your photos are never uploaded. If you also want to strip location and camera metadata, pair this with the EXIF remover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rotate by a custom angle?+
Yes, you can enter any angle from 0° to 360°. Preset buttons for 90°, 180°, and 270° are available for quick rotation.
What's the difference between rotate and flip?+
Rotation turns the image around its center point. Flip mirrors the image horizontally (left-right) or vertically (top-bottom).
Does rotation affect image quality?+
90° and 180° rotations preserve quality perfectly. Custom angles may introduce minimal interpolation artifacts.
Can I rotate multiple images at once?+
Yes, upload multiple files and apply the same rotation to all of them with a single click.
Can I flip images horizontally or vertically?+
Yes. In addition to rotating 90°, 180°, or 270°, you can flip images horizontally (mirror) or vertically. PNG and WebP flips are lossless; JPEG uses adjustable quality settings.
Does rotating an image reduce its quality?+
For 90°, 180°, and 270° rotations, there is zero quality loss — these are lossless operations performed by rewriting pixel order. Arbitrary angle rotations (e.g., 45°) require re-encoding and may introduce minimal changes in lossy formats like JPG.
