YouTube Intro Screen Image Size: Dimensions & Format Guide 2026

By Picovert Team2026-05-055 min read

YouTube intro screens, end screens, channel branding, and watermarks all have specific image requirements. Using the wrong dimensions results in blurry visuals, awkward cropping, or elements disappearing on different devices. This guide covers every YouTube image type in 2026 — from intro frames to end screen thumbnails — with exact pixel dimensions, safe zones, and format tips.

YouTube Video Dimensions (For Intro/Outro Frame Context)

When designing intro screens as static images embedded in your video, the image should match the video's resolution exactly:

  • 1080p (Full HD): 1920×1080 px — the standard for most YouTube channels
  • 4K UHD: 3840×2160 px — for high-production channels targeting 4K viewers
  • 720p HD: 1280×720 px — minimum acceptable quality for modern YouTube
  • Aspect ratio: always 16:9 for standard YouTube videos

YouTube End Screen Image Size

End screens appear in the last 5–20 seconds of a video. They can include video thumbnails and subscribe button elements. YouTube generates these from your uploaded thumbnails and channel art, but you can also add custom end screen templates as part of your video frame.

  • End screen template image: 1920×1080 px (same as video frame)
  • Safe zone for end screen elements: YouTube places end screen clickable elements in the outer thirds of the frame. Leave the center 60% clear of critical content if you are designing an end screen template image

YouTube Thumbnail Size (Used in Intro Cards)

Thumbnails appear in intro screen cards and as recommended video previews:

  • Thumbnail size: 1280×720 px (minimum 640×360 px)
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • Maximum file size: 2 MB
  • Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF (static), BMP, WebP

YouTube Channel Art (Banner) Size

  • Full banner size: 2560×1440 px
  • Safe zone for all devices: 1546×423 px centered — content outside this area may be cropped on TV, tablet, or mobile
  • Desktop minimum: 2560×423 px
  • Maximum file size: 6 MB
  • Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP

YouTube Channel Icon (Profile Photo) Size

  • Recommended size: 800×800 px (displayed as a circle)
  • Minimum size: 98×98 px
  • Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP
  • Maximum file size: 2 MB
  • Note: YouTube channel icons are managed through your Google account profile photo

YouTube Watermark Image Size

The YouTube video watermark appears in the lower-right corner of the video player throughout your video:

  • Recommended size: 150×150 px
  • Maximum size: 1 MB
  • Supported formats: PNG (with transparency), JPEG, GIF, BMP
  • Best practice: use a PNG with transparent background. A solid background watermark covers part of your video content and looks unprofessional

How to Prepare YouTube Images

  1. Resize to correct dimensions: use image resizerto scale thumbnails to exactly 1280×720 px and channel art to 2560×1440 px. Correct dimensions prevent YouTube's upscaling from making your images look blurry
  2. Compress for faster upload: use image compressor to reduce thumbnail file sizes to under 500 KB. YouTube has a 2 MB limit per thumbnail, but smaller files upload faster during your workflow
  3. Add branding watermark: use watermark tool to add your logo or brand overlay to intro screen images before embedding them in your video
  4. Convert format if needed: YouTube accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP. Use image converter to convert HEIC or WebP to JPEG if you have compatibility issues

YouTube Intro Safe Zone Guidelines

When designing intro frames that will appear in the YouTube player, avoid placing important content within 5% of any edge. YouTube adds a progress bar at the bottom of the player, and on mobile the title and subscribe button overlay appears in the lower third. Keep your logo and main message in the center 70% of the frame for maximum visibility on all devices.
