YouTube Shorts is a 9:16 vertical video format — completely different from regular YouTube's 16:9 horizontal layout. That difference matters most when it comes to thumbnail images. Using a standard 1280×720 thumbnail for a Shorts video produces letterboxing or cropping on mobile. This guide covers the exact image sizes for every YouTube Shorts asset.
YouTube Shorts Thumbnail Size
- Recommended: 1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical) — matches Shorts aspect ratio perfectly
- Also accepted: 1280×720 px (16:9 horizontal), but it gets letterboxed or cropped when displayed on Shorts
- Minimum: 640 px on the shortest side
- Max file size: 2 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (static only, no animated GIF), BMP, WebP
Always use 1080×1920 for Shorts thumbnails specifically. If you upload a 1280×720 image, YouTube will display it with black bars on the sides or crop it to fit the vertical frame — neither looks good on the Shorts feed.
Note: YouTube requires channel verification (phone number) to upload custom thumbnails. Unverified channels use auto-generated frames from the video.
YouTube Shorts vs Regular YouTube Thumbnails
- Regular YouTube thumbnail: 1280×720 px (16:9 horizontal) — standard widescreen format
- YouTube Shorts thumbnail: 1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical) — full vertical to match the video
The two formats are fundamentally different. A 16:9 thumbnail on a Shorts video appears horizontally with black bars on mobile, or gets zoomed and cropped. Always create your Shorts thumbnail at 9:16 from the start — don't resize a 16:9 image to 9:16, as that produces a pillarboxed result.
Safe Zone for Shorts Thumbnails
YouTube overlays UI elements on the Shorts player — the video title, like/comment buttons, and the channel name sit over the top and bottom of the image. Keep important content (face, subject, key text) in the center 60% of the frame to avoid being covered.
- Top 15%: may be covered by the video title and timestamp
- Bottom 25%: covered by like/comment buttons and channel name
- Safe area: keep key content within the center 1080×1152 px region of the 1080×1920 canvas
Tips for Shorts Thumbnails
- Bold, high-contrast text: Shorts are viewed on small mobile screens. If you add text, keep it large and high-contrast — at least 60 px equivalent at final resolution.
- Shoot or crop at 9:16 from the start: Don't resize a 16:9 image to 9:16. Use the image resizer to set exact dimensions, or use the crop tool to crop to 9:16 first.
- Compress to under 500 KB: For fast display, keep your thumbnail under 500 KB. Use Picovert's image compressor — JPG at 85% quality for a 1080×1920 image typically lands around 200–400 KB.
- YouTube auto-generates 3 thumbnail frames: You can pick one or upload a custom image. Custom thumbnails consistently perform better.
Profile Photo Size
- Recommended: 800×800 px (1:1 square, displayed as a circle)
- Minimum: 98×98 px
- Max file size: 4 MB
- Formats: JPG or PNG
Keep the main subject (face or logo) centered — the circular crop cuts the corners. Upload at 800×800 for sharp display; smaller images get upscaled and appear blurry.
Channel Art / Banner Size
- Full canvas: 2560×1440 px
- Safe zone (visible on all devices): center 1546×423 px area
- Max file size: 6 MB
Different devices show different portions of the banner. TV displays show the full 2560×1440 px. Desktops show roughly 2560×423 px. Mobile shows only the center 1546×423 px safe zone. Design for the safe zone first, then extend the design to the full canvas.
