Amazon's image requirements are stricter than most platforms. The main product image must have a pure white background, and violating the rules can get your listing suppressed. Get it right from the start: 2000×2000 px square, white background, product fills 85% of the frame. This guide covers the main image, secondary images, and how to prepare photos for Amazon listings.
Amazon Image Requirements — Quick Reference
- Main image size: 2000×2000 px recommended (zoom enabled); 500×500 minimum
- Minimum for zoom: 1000 px on the longest side (1000×1000 for square)
- Max images per listing: 9 total (1 main + 8 secondary)
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 square strongly recommended
- Main image background: pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) — mandatory
- Product coverage: product must fill at least 85% of the image area
- Max file size: 10 MB per image
- Formats: JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF (JPEG preferred)
- Color mode: sRGB or CMYK
Main Image Rules (Strictly Enforced)
Amazon actively suppresses listings with non-compliant main images. These rules are mandatory for the primary product image:
- Pure white background only: RGB 255, 255, 255. Off-white, grey, or shadows will fail. Use a lightbox or remove the background digitally
- Product must be 85%+ of image: no excessive white space around the product
- No text, watermarks, or logos: no promotional badges, "new" banners, or brand logos overlaid on the image
- No props unless essential: accessories not included in the sale should not appear in the main image
- No mannequins for clothing: apparel should be flat-lay or on a model — not on a visible mannequin
- Single unit only: unless selling a multi-pack, show only one item
- No Amazon branding: don't include Prime badges or any Amazon logos
Secondary Image Guidelines
Secondary images (up to 8) have fewer restrictions and are your opportunity to tell the full product story:
- Lifestyle photos: product in use, in context, with models — any background allowed
- Infographic images: callouts showing dimensions, materials, features. Add text overlays here (not on the main image)
- Comparison charts: show variants or compare with similar products
- Size charts: especially important for apparel, bags, and furniture
- Detail shots: zoom in on materials, stitching, texture, screen, or other key features
- Packaging: show what's in the box, especially for gift items
All secondary images: same size requirements (2000×2000 px recommended), same file size limit (10 MB), JPEG format preferred.
Pixel Requirements Explained
- 500×500 px: minimum accepted. No zoom. Listing will show but images look small on detail page
- 1000×1000 px: minimum for zoom to activate on desktop. Customers can hover to enlarge
- 2000×2000 px: Amazon's recommendation. Zoom works fully on desktop and mobile. Looks sharp on all devices
- 3000×3000 px: higher than needed — Amazon will resize down. No benefit over 2000×2000 px
How to Prepare Amazon Product Photos
- Shoot on white or remove background: photograph on a clean white surface with good lighting, or use photo editing to remove the background and replace with pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255)
- Crop to 1:1 square: use the image cropper, set ratio to 1:1, and center the product with roughly equal white space on all sides
- Resize to 2000×2000 px: use the image resizer — this ensures zoom works and images look sharp on all devices
- Compress the file: use the image compressor at 85–90% quality to bring files under 2 MB for faster loading. Amazon's CDN serves these to millions of shoppers
- Save as JPG and upload to Seller Central
Why Amazon Suppresses Non-Compliant Images
Amazon uses automated scanning to detect main images that don't meet requirements. A suppressed listing won't appear in search results and won't be buyable. Common suppression reasons:
- Background is not pure white (grey, off-white, or has shadows)
- Product takes up less than 85% of the image frame
- Text or promotional graphics on the main image
- Watermarks or borders
- Low resolution (under 500 px on any side)
Fix the image and re-upload — listings typically come out of suppression within 24–48 hours after a compliant image is uploaded.
