Snapchat Image Sizes 2026 — Snaps, Stories, Spotlight & Ads

Snapchat is built around vertical 9:16 content — the full-screen format that fills a smartphone display. Every Snapchat surface uses this orientation, but the exact dimensions, safe zones, and file limits differ depending on where you are posting.

Snapchat Snaps and Stories

Snaps (direct messages) and Stories (24-hour posts) use the same full-screen format:

  • Recommended dimensions: 1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical). This fills a modern smartphone screen at native resolution
  • Safe zone: Keep important content in the central 1080×1420 px area. Snapchat places the username/avatar at the top (~260 px) and the swipe-up or reply area at the bottom (~240 px) — content placed in these areas will be obscured
  • Format: JPEG or PNG for images. MP4 or MOV for videos
  • Maximum file size: 5 MB for images, 1 GB for video (direct send), 32 MB for video Stories
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 is the standard. Content in other ratios gets black bars added at the top and bottom

Snapchat Spotlight

Spotlight is Snapchat's TikTok-like short video feed. It uses the same dimensions as Stories:

  • Dimensions: 1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical)
  • Video length: 3 seconds to 60 seconds for Spotlight
  • Safe zone: The bottom ~20% (approximately 1080×384 px) overlaps with Spotlight's interface buttons — keep important visual content away from the bottom edge
  • Maximum file size: 1 GB for Spotlight videos

Snapchat Profile and Bitmoji

  • Profile photo: 320×320 px minimum recommended. Snapchat displays the profile picture in a small circle — a clean square headshot or logo works best
  • Bitmoji: Bitmoji avatars are set through the Bitmoji app and are vector-based — no image size to manage

Snap Ads (Advertising)

For Snapchat advertising campaigns, the specifications are more precise:

  • Single image or video ad: 1080×1920 px (9:16), JPEG or PNG, under 5 MB for images
  • Story ad: 3–20 individual creatives, each 1080×1920 px
  • Collection ad: 1080×1920 px hero media plus 160×160 px thumbnail images for each product tile
  • Filter (Geofilter): 1080×2340 px canvas with transparent safe zone. The actual design area is 1080×1920 px centered on a taller canvas
  • Lens (AR): Preview images should be 240×240 px for the tile icon

Why 9:16 Matters on Snapchat

Snapchat was designed mobile-first and vertical-first before TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts existed. Content that is not 9:16 gets letterboxed (black bars) or pillarboxed. On a 1080×1920 display:

  • A 1:1 square (1080×1080) leaves 840 px of black bars total — significant visual dead space
  • A 16:9 landscape (1920×1080) shrinks to 1080×608 px with 656 px of black bars — the content appears as a small rectangle in the center of the screen
  • A true 9:16 vertical (1080×1920) fills the screen completely with no wasted space

Snapchat Image Compression

Snapchat compresses images when sent as Snaps. The degree of compression depends on the recipient's device and network conditions. To minimize the effect:

  • Upload at exactly 1080×1920 px — images that need to be scaled down get a second round of compression
  • Use JPEG at 85–90% quality. Snapchat applies its own compression so starting very high (100%) provides marginal benefit over 90%
  • Avoid heavy pre-compression — sending at 60% quality then having Snapchat compress again creates visible banding and artifacts

Step-by-Step: Prepare Images for Snapchat

  1. Start with a vertical composition or use the Image Cropper to crop to 9:16 ratio
  2. Use the Image Resizer to set dimensions to 1080×1920 px exactly
  3. Keep important content in the central safe zone — at least 130 px from the top and 120 px from the bottom
  4. For JPEG exports: use the Image Compressor at 85–90% quality. Target file size under 3 MB for fast sending
