WhatsApp Image Size Guide: Profile, Status, and Stickers

WhatsApp compresses almost every image you send — unless you know how to stop it. Profile photos get cropped to circles, Status updates are capped at 16 MB, and stickers must be transparent WebP files under 100 KB. Using the right dimensions upfront prevents blurry photos, broken layouts, and rejected uploads.

WhatsApp Profile Photo

  • Recommended size: 500×500 px. WhatsApp displays profile photos as small circles — the actual display size in chat is about 50×50 px, but 500×500 ensures sharpness at all sizes
  • Maximum file size: 5 MB
  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG
  • Aspect ratio: Square (1:1). Non-square images are cropped — use the Image Cropper to square-crop before uploading

WhatsApp Status (Stories)

Status images appear full-screen on mobile and disappear after 24 hours. WhatsApp compresses them aggressively — originals over about 1 MB are visibly degraded.

  • Recommended size: 1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical). Fills the full mobile screen without letterboxing
  • Maximum file size: 16 MB (video), about 5 MB for images
  • Safe zone: Keep text and key elements in the center 1080×1420 px — the top 250 px shows the contact name and bottom 250 px shows the reply bar
  • Format tip: Export JPEG at 85–90% quality for photo backgrounds; use PNG for Status images with text or logos

WhatsApp Image Sharing (Sent as Photo)

When you send an image as a photo (not a document), WhatsApp re-encodes it to JPEG at approximately 80% quality and scales down images wider than 1600 px. This is fine for casual sharing but bad for portfolios or product shots.

  • Maximum resolution after compression: approximately 1600 px on the long side for images sent via photo mode
  • To avoid compression: tap the paperclip icon → select "Document" instead of "Photo". The recipient receives the original file, unmodified
  • Best practice for quality photos: send as Document. For casual snapshots, photo mode is fine

WhatsApp Stickers

  • Size: exactly 512×512 px
  • Maximum file size: 100 KB
  • Format: WebP with transparency (alpha channel required)
  • Animated stickers: WebP animated, 500 KB max, 1–3 seconds
  • Design tip: keep the subject centered with clear edges for the transparent background; sticker borders show against any chat background

Why WhatsApp Compresses Images

WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption and stores messages on devices, not servers. To keep bandwidth and storage manageable — especially for users on limited mobile data — images sent as photos are downscaled and re-encoded to JPEG. The compression is heavier for images with fine detail (text, logos, screenshots) than for natural photos.

PNG files sent as photos are converted to JPEG, losing transparency. If you need to send a transparent PNG, use the Document method — it preserves the original file exactly.

Step-by-Step: Prepare WhatsApp Images

  1. Profile photo: square-crop to 1:1, then resize to 500×500 px. Keep the subject centered
  2. Status image: resize to 1080×1920 px. Keep important content in the center 1080×1420 px safe zone
  3. Photo sharing for quality: send via "Document" — no compression applied. If you must use photo mode, compress beforehand at 85–90% JPEG to control quality yourself
  4. Stickers: design at 512×512 px with a transparent background. Export as WebP under 100 KB. Use image compression to hit the size limit
