PNG to BMP — FAQ

Why would I convert PNG to BMP?+
BMP is required by some legacy Windows applications, older hardware, and certain embedded systems that don't support PNG. It's the most compatible pixel format for Windows-specific workflows.
Will my PNG transparency be preserved in BMP?+
Standard 24-bit BMP does not support transparency — transparent PNG areas will be filled with a white background. 32-bit BMP can store alpha, but most apps don't use it.
Why is the BMP file much larger than my PNG?+
BMP stores raw, uncompressed pixel data while PNG uses lossless compression. A 1 MB PNG can produce a 5–15 MB BMP depending on image dimensions.
Is there any quality loss when converting PNG to BMP?+
No quality loss for opaque images. PNG's lossless compression is decoded to raw pixels and stored as BMP — the visible result is identical.
Why would I need PNG to BMP conversion?+
Some Windows legacy applications, industrial systems, and older design tools only accept BMP format. Picovert converts PNG to 24-bit uncompressed BMP instantly. Note that BMP files are larger than PNG since they store raw pixel data.
What color depth does the converted BMP file use?+
Picovert produces 24-bit RGB BMP files (16.7 million colors) by default. PNG images with transparency (32-bit RGBA) are converted to 24-bit BMP with a white background, since the standard Windows BMP format does not support alpha transparency.
