YouTube Banner Size Guide: Channel Art Dimensions 2026

By Picovert Team2026-04-074 min read

YouTube channel art (the banner at the top of your channel page) is the trickiest image on any platform to size correctly. The same 2560×1440 px image displays differently on desktops, tablets, phones, and TVs — with large portions cropped away on smaller screens. Using the wrong safe zone means your channel name gets cut off, or your logo ends up in the black border on TV screens.

YouTube Banner Dimensions

YouTube uses a single 2560×1440 px image but shows a different cropped region on each device type:

  • Total canvas size: 2560×1440 px — this is the file you upload. It must be at least 2048×1152 px; 2560×1440 is the recommended maximum
  • Desktop safe zone: 1546×423 px (centered). This is the area visible on all desktop displays — keep all text and logos inside this region
  • Tablet view: 1855×423 px (centered) — slightly wider than desktop
  • Mobile view: 1546×423 px — same as desktop safe zone
  • TV display: the full 2560×1440 px image is shown. Design the full canvas so TV viewers see a complete, polished image (not a cropped strip with empty edges)
  • Maximum file size: 6 MB
  • Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP

Understanding the Safe Zone

The safe zone is the 1546×423 px centered rectangle that is guaranteed to be visible on every device. Think of the 2560×1440 canvas in three layers:

  • Outer region (full 2560×1440 px): visible only on TV — use this for background imagery and brand colors
  • Middle region (1855×423 px): visible on tablets and TV
  • Safe zone (1546×423 px): visible on all devices including phones — this is where your channel name, logo, and key messaging belong

The safe zone height of 423 px creates the "banner strip" appearance on desktop and mobile. The total canvas is 1440 px tall but only the middle 423 px strip is shown on non-TV devices.

YouTube Channel Icon (Profile Picture)

  • Recommended size: 800×800 px. YouTube displays the channel icon as a circle in many places — use a simple, high-contrast design
  • Maximum file size: 4 MB
  • Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (no animated GIF)
  • Aspect ratio: Square (1:1). Non-square images will be cropped to a circle — use the Image Cropper to center your subject
  • Note: The channel icon is shared with your Google account profile photo — changing one changes both

YouTube Watermark (Subscribe Button)

  • Recommended size: 150×150 px. This small image appears as an overlay in the bottom-right of all your videos, encouraging viewers to subscribe
  • Maximum file size: 1 MB
  • Accepted formats: PNG recommended (for transparent background), JPG

YouTube Community Post Images

  • Recommended size: 1080×1080 px (square) for feed posts. YouTube also accepts landscape images (1280×720 px)
  • Maximum file size: 16 MB

Designing Your YouTube Channel Art

Good channel art communicates your content category immediately. Key design principles:

  • Place your channel name and logo in the 1546×423 px safe zone — never outside it, since it will be cropped on phones
  • Design the full 2560×1440 px canvas as a complete image so TV viewers see professional branding, not a thin strip surrounded by empty space
  • Use brand colors and fonts that match your thumbnails for visual consistency
  • Keep background patterns subtle so they do not compete with text in the safe zone
  • Leave breathing room around text — the safe zone edges can still feel tight on some screen sizes

Step-by-Step: Prepare YouTube Channel Art

  1. Start with a 2560×1440 px canvas. Design the full background for TV viewers
  2. Mark the safe zone: a 1546×423 px rectangle centered at (507, 509) from the top-left corner. Place all text, logos, and key elements inside this area
  3. Export as JPG at 90% quality (for photo backgrounds) or PNG (for graphics/text). Use image compression to keep the file under 6 MB
  4. If you only have a banner image at the wrong size, use the Image Resizer to scale it to 2560×1440 px, then manually re-center any text elements
